“Watching God Grow Up”
So far in Luke we have visited three scenes:
Gabriel comes to Zacharias (Dec. 13) Gabriel comes to Mary (Dec. 20)
Christ is born (Dec. 24)
We might understand the first two scenes as preparation for the 3rd scene.
Today we begin with the response of the shepherds and then engage with the early life of Jesus. Luke 2:15-40 A short summary of Jesus childhood.
Some historians have pointed to chapter 2 of Luke as proof that the Bible is not historically accurate because the mention of Quirinius of Syria and the census would not match the timeline readily accepted for Jesus birth, about 6 BC. ________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________ Our text today begins with the Shepherds doing what we would fully expect. They went to Bethlehem to see for themselves what the Angels had told them. And it was so, just as they had been informed so they began to spread the news, “they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child.” (vs.17) The saying they made knows is the content of verse 11: “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Next we see the parents doing what we would expect. _____________________________ As faithful Jewish parents they begin to raise Jesus according to the LAW and Jewish custom.
1. Circumcised on the 8th day, as required in Genesis 17:12 & Leviticus 12:3.
2. “Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed” –
The instructions for Mary after giving birth to a male child are given in Leviticus 12:1-4. ____
____________________________________________________________________________ Jesus is brought to the Temple for presentation to the Lord, for He was a male child that opened the womb, holy to the Lord. In every way, we can say and see that this is fulfillment of the LAW. ____________________________________________________________________
There are those in attendance who give Spirit led testimony:
Simeon – the name means ‘one who hears and obeys’. ______________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ Simeon’s testimony is profound: (vs. 29-32)
1. Jesus is the way of salvation. 2. Jesus is salvation for all people.
3. A light of revelation to Gentiles. 4. Glory of Your people Israel.
Simeon has another task. He gives Mary insight of the twofold reaction that Jesus will create:
“The fall and rising of many in Israel” – __________________________________________
“A sword will pierce through your own soul also” – ________________________________
Anna – ____________________________________________________________________
We have a female witness as well as a male witness from among the people. Luke gives us a summation statement in verse 40: “And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon Him.”
