“Thy Kingdom Come”
Jesus spoke to the Jewish multitude of a kingdom that has come, which is just what they desire. Except, their desired answer is another earthly king who can overthrow the Romans and restore the land to the people. If we develop kingdom attitudes we are promised “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. In verse 12 the emphasis is directed to “great is your reward in heaven.” Jesus kingdom is not of this world but our citizenship starts in this world, in fact, must start in this world!
Matthew 8:18-34 At war with the world.
How many preachers today walk away when a multitude gathers? Certainly not the ones you see on TV or often see on crusades. Gathering multitudes is one of the great ways people have been introduced to the Gospel. So, should we shy away from large event ministry today?
Jesus walks away because we know from Scripture, “God knows the heart.” ______________
Before Jesus sails away two different representative of the multitude come forward.
The scribe – (vs. 19 & 20) this man was a trained religious specialist. _____________________ You must be prepared to follow Jesus when you come into His kingdom and it may lead you away from security and comfort. __________________________________________________
Another disciple – (vs. 21 & 22) This may be one of the disciples mentioned who turned away from Jesus because of “hard sayings”. This sounds so hard to our ears. Maybe there are some cultural explanations that help us understand this rather caustic remark:
Death of a father in the Mideast and Asia __________________________________________
“When He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him.” The classic definition of a disciple – one who follows Jesus. ________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________ Jesus gives a rebuke: “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?”
Jesus dealt with the storm and the disciples marveled because the healer of humanity also has power over the elements, the sea and the wind. ____________________________________
When the boat lands, the location is not in a good neighborhood. Get ready disciples. If you follow Jesus you just might encounter unsavory places. The Gergesenes or Gadarenes region according to Mark was a Gentile area with a large Jewish population. ___________________
So Jesus encounters men inhabited by demonic spirits and these spirits ask the strangest question: “What have we to do with you Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” What do demons know?
1. That Jesus is the Son of God and that Holiness has nothing to do with evil.
2. That they are destined for judgment, thus their question about the time.
Based on this, their request to have a new home in pigs makes sense. It was that or the lake of fire or some other immediate judgment. Of course we observe the good sense of the pigs, throwing themselves into the sea and perishing.
The Gentiles who kept the pigs asked Jesus to leave. He was bad for business.
