“This We Believe”
I. Last week we looked at prophesy of Isaiah, specifically chapter 7, verse 14, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” ______________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________ In the midst of this prophesy we encounter more of the Messianic promise: “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” Isaiah 9:6&7 Let’s break down what God was promising:
Unto us a child is born – In 7:14 Isaiah spoke of God with us, “Immanuel” so what will be the framework that God chooses for salvation – a child born to us__________________________
Unto us a Son is given – ________________________________________________________ Hebrews 3:4-6, “For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.” Romans 8:16 declares how we have confidence in this work of God: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
And His name – _______________________________________________________________ The Lord provides a foundation of how precious is the name of the Son:
1. Wonderful – _______________________________________________________________
2. Counselor – ________________________________________________________________
3. Mighty God – _______________________________________________________________
4. Everlasting Father – _________________________________________________________
5. the Prince of Peace – ________________________________________________________
The coming of Jesus and the resulting victory of the Resurrection established 2 things:
1. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end – _______________________
2. Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. – __________________________________________
We are encouraged to know what we believe and believe what we know. Over the centuries the Church has developed and affirmed numerous creeds, from the Nicene, to the Apostles, to more modern versions. Listen to this contemporary creed. Ingest it into your consciousness and pray the Lord help you to live what it declares:
We believe in Jesus Christ our Lord, Who was promised to the people of Israel,
Who came in the flesh to dwell among us, Who announced the coming of the rule of God.
Who gathered disciples and taught them, Who died on the cross to free us from sin,
Who rose from the dead to give us life & hope, Who reigns in heaven at the right hand of God,
Who comes to judge and bring justice to victory.
We believe in God His Father, Who raised Him from the dead,
Who created and sustains the universe, Who acts to deliver His people in times of need,
Who desires all men everywhere to be saved, Who rules over the destinies of men & nations,
Who continues to love men even when they reject Him.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, Who is the form of God present in the church,
Who moves men to faith and obedience, Who is the guarantee of our deliverance,
Who leads us to find God’s will in the Word, Who assists those whom He renews in prayer,
Who guides us in discernment, Who impels us to act together.
We believe God has made us His people, To invite others to follow Christ,
To encourage one another to deeper commitment, To proclaim forgiveness of sins & hope,
To reconcile men to God through word & deed, To bear witness to the power of love over hate,
To proclaim Jesus the Lord over all, To meet the daily tasks of life with purpose,
To suffer joyfully for the cause of right, To the ends of the earth,
To the end of the age, To the praise of His glory. AMEN
