“Our Job Description”
Matthew 28:16-20 The job description of the Church.
“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”
Let’s focus on Jesus words specifically:
“All authority has been given to Me” – __________________________________________
1. The number one common trait of the human personality is rebellion. Christianity calls this trait the “Sin nature”. It is our desire to be in control no matter the cost or the consequence.
2. In our study of John we saw that Jesus was educating them and preparing them to receive the Holy Spirit, which He directly called the “Spirit of Truth”. Until we see the truth and submit ourselves to it we will stay in rebellion. __________________________________________
Now we have our instructions:
Go – ______________________________________________________________________
Baptize – Why do we baptize people into the faith? _________________________________
Teaching them – The primary task of the Church is to teach disciples about the foundations of their faith so that they can witness to the truth of the Gospel. This teaching is sometimes referred to as equipping the saints, because we are now saints since the Lord has called us out of the world and into His kingdom. Discipleship is a continual action until we see the Lord face to face. Part of discipleship is the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, the transformation from who we were to who we are becoming, “Christ-like”.
Jesus leaves us with encouragement – “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” __________________________________________________________________________
The Character of the Church is Holiness. “Be Ye holy, as I am Holy Declares the Lord”
The activity of the Church is service. “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”
The power of the Church is the Holy Spirit. “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority but whatever He hears He will speak and He will tell you things to come.”
The glory of the Church is Jesus the LORD!
