“Light – Walk – Life”
So here I am to worship. What an incredible place for us to be, here to worship. Convinced in our mind that God is the only way, open in our heart to hear and obey, and trusting in the journey of new life in Him.
John 8:12-32 A few simple topics – light, life, truth, and freedom. The high points.
Verse 12 – the statement: “I am the light of the world.” Jesus keeps revealing His identity. The rest of the statement, “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life”, is both a reference to prophesy (Isaiah 9:2) and a promise of change (not walk in darkness; have the light of life). _________________________________________________
The statement and the feast – Weeks ago as we began chapter 7, I let you know that these chapters must be understood within the context of the feast of Sukkot. So verse 12 has a very significant backdrop within the feast. _____________________________________________
The witness – verses 13 – 20 – The Pharisee’s challenge Jesus about the validity of His witness in verse 13 based on Deuteronomy 19:15; “One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.” ________________________________________________
A universal problem – verses 21-29 – “I am going away”. The hope of Israel was Messiah. Here He is before them and they “know Him, not”. ______________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________So the Jew of 1st Century Israel is a picture of humanity today. The Scripture enjoins us to “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near”, Isaiah 55:6.
The Power of the Gospel – verses 30-32 – Many believed so Jesus gave them the simplest instruction, “Abide in my word.” It’s simple but it is not easy. ___________________________
